how to: travel with just a carry on

choose your luggage wisely

I recommend a hard sided luggage with 360 degree wheels. The reason is, if you are an over-packer, choosing a soft-sided bag will tempt you to stuff as much as you can. The issue with this is over-stuffing will put your carry-on outside of the limit and more than likely you will be asked to drop your bag into the luggage measuring thing by the flight attendant, and no one wants to do that. With a hard sided luggage you are set to the size and know that bag will be compliant and your items are safe and secure/won’t get squished in the overhead compartment.

utilize the personal item

Don’t let your personal item be your crossbody bag! This is such a wasted use of valuable packing space potential. Check with your airline for specific requirements, but most “personal item” dimensions are quite large 18″ x 14″ x 8″ – take advantage of that! Below are a few of my favorites for this. Still bring your purse, crossbody, etc. just pop it inside of your “personal item” when it is time to board.

make a list & check the weather

Now this is the most crucial part. I always check the weather a few times leading up to a trip as it can fluctuate, but for the most part you can prepare. From there I base my packing off of the itinerary for each day; lots of walking, outdoors, nice dinner or event, tours, etc. This helps to narrow down on the overpacking. I then complete my list from this information and plan each look for each day and event, leaving one outfit undefined as a just-in-case for inclement weather or comfort.

choose pieces you can wear more than once

I always fly with compression leggings, and sneakers. If I know I need sneakers for another day, I will make sure the ones I am traveling in will coordinate, to limit the shoes packed. I will then only pack a pair of dress shoes, and or boots/sandals depending on the destination. Shoes take up a tremendous amount of suitcase real estate so limiting the amount of footwear the better. As for jeans, just a classic blue and black pair. Flattering jeans that will go with multiple outfits, and can be re-worn are the best for traveling and packing light. And lastly on the versatile list, is a neutral color cardigan sweater that can be worn flying, and packed in your “personal item” it won’t take up luggage space and can be styled on another day of your trip.

enjoy your trip

With outfits planned, no time wasted waiting at baggage check or claim, you can enjoy your trip much lighter and more organized. Safe travels!
